1/17/24: PGP Meetings
The counselors have started meeting individually with 8th grade students to complete Personal Graduation Plans. Parents/Guardians will be asked to look through and sign off on these plans, which are tentative 4-year course plans for high school. PGPs are not official course selections, but are just plans for students/families to use as a starting point for high school planning. Please be patient with this process, as it takes time to meet individually with every 8th grade student. If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to a school counselor.

10/30/23: Red Ribbon Week
October 23rd through 27th was Red Ribbon week for Taylor ISD. This week is an opportunity for students to acknowledge the importance of living drug free. The middle school participated in daily activities that were given through FIT time. Each day the students heard stories of successful people that used their natural high to reach their goals and had discussions. On Thursday, the students chose to sign a drug free pledge banner. After they signed, they received a wrist band as a reminder of their commitment to stay healthy. The students want to be part of the solution! We are so proud of them.

9/19/23: Counselor Lesson on Communication Skills & Personal Space
Last week, the counselors gave a lesson about communication, personal space and consequences of invading personal space to 6th-8th grade classes. This was the number one lesson topic requested by administration and teachers on our 2023-2024 Needs Assessment, given at the beginning of this year. Students did a great job of listening and participating. Before the lesson, they were given a pretest to see what knowledge they already had over the subject. After the lesson they were given a post test to see what knowledge was gained. We saw an increase in mastery in every question on the post-test. Here are the results:
Question 1: TRUE or FALSE: I can name at least 2 ways to communicate with others here at school. 13.5% gain in the number of students who replied TRUE in the post test.
Question 2: TRUE or FALSE: I can describe the difference between appropriate/positive and inappropriate/negative communication. 10.4% gain in the number of students who replied TRUE in the post-test.
Question 3: TRUE or FALSE: I can name some of the reasons that personal space sometimes gets invaded. 16.3% gain in the number of students who replied TRUE in the post test.
Question 4: TRUE or FALSE: I can name some of the possible consequences of invading someone's space. 16.7% gain in the number of students who replied TRUE in the post test.
Additionally, all students were asked if this lesson should be shared with students next year. The answer was a resounding YES at 92.9% saying that they did think it was important to share. We were very pleased to offer this lesson in response to the needs our school family identified and are hopeful that we will see a positive shift in how students communicate and interact with others here at school.

9/8/23: Counselor Classroom Lessons
Just a quick update:
During the school year, the counselors provide 4 in-classroom lessons for students at TMS in addition to coordinating the SecondStep curriculum that is used once per week in FIT class (more info under "Resources").
During the first couple of weeks of school, we provided a brief introductory classroom lesson to all students to let them know how we can help and how to contact us, if needed, this year. During this lesson, students had the opportunity to fill out a Needs Assessment Survey, very similar to the Parent/Family Survey and Faculty Survey we previously made available.
Next week, we will be providing a lesson to all students that will discuss appropriate ways to communicate and interact with others while at school.
Please contact your child's counselor with any questions/concerns.
